Letter from the Superintendent

September 2015

Dear Colleagues:

Happy New Year! Welcome back to all our returning staff, and welcome aboard all new teachers and staff who joined our team this summer. I am looking forward to meeting you and working together this year. I hope you have been able to enjoy the wonderful summer weather and are ready to return for the start of what promises to be a very exciting and productive school year.

This summer, we have been busy at Schalmont working on the installation and completion of the action steps associated with year one implementation of our District Technology plan. Many of you will have new interactive boards in your classrooms when you return, and all 9th grade teachers will return knowing that each of their students will have access to a 1:1 device in the form of a Chromebooks to extend their learning. In addition, Chromebook carts will be accessible in all schools, along with all Google for Education apps and our new learning management system, Schoology. Our new digital literacy class is equipped with many technological advances that will allow 6th grade students to launch into 21st century experiences and prepare more fully for their time as a
secondary student.

Many of our teachers were quite busy this summer working on curriculum in multiple content areas, particularly English Language ArtsThey have the solid beginnings of an aligned and consistent curriculum that all can implement. I think you will be quite pleased with the work accomplished thus far. Our teachers on special assignment have been hard at work also, preparing for the 2015-16 school year, and many teachers and staff took advantage of summer workshops and conference offerings.

We received our state and regents exam results, and I am happy to say we are on an upward trajectory in our results, outscoring area school districts as well as the county and state! While there is still work to do, we should be proud of our efforts too.

Of course, our coaches and music staff have been back for a bit now, preparing for the upcoming fall season in athletics and marching band. Fall is always such a fun time for both sports and music events.

There is so much to be excited about in Schalmont as we plan and prepare for yet another school year! On opening day we, will articulate our technology focus for the year and lay out a clear, progressive plan for assisting everyone in learning new ways of implementing our initiatives. There is much to learn; however we will walk every step of the way together, take our time, and offer multiple opportunities for teachers to learn and collaborate together.

Attached you will find the schedule for opening day; it is a little different this year in that we will have only one Superintendent’s Conference Day prior to students returning on September 9th. The morning of September 8th will be focused on our district initiatives and on staff meetings back in each building. In the afternoon, all teachers and staff will have time in their rooms to get ready for students.

I so look forward to seeing all of you again and talking a little bit about our theme for this year: “Who Owns the Learning?â€�.  I hope you feel as re-charged and energized as I do to get back to our important work as a team of dedicated educators.
