Schalmont Alum Alex Feuz Shares Advice

Speaker addresses class

Schalmont High School’s Sports Marketing Class received some great career advice Friday when they welcomed Alex Feuz, a 2018 Schalmont alum who now works for ESPN.

Mr. Feuz has spoken to Schalmont students in each of the past few years as he shares his story that began when he created a podcast while in Middle School interviewing student athletes and coaches.

At age 13, interviewing Coach Joe Whipple and star quarterback Nick Gallo was like interviewing Bill Belicheck and Tom Brady, Mr. Feuz joked. But he explained it helped him learn how to build relationships and soon he was interviewing people like Pete Rose.

Mr. Feuz went on to study Sports Broadcasting at Siena College and worked as a Play-by-Play Broadcaster for minor league baseball teams and later a Broadcast Assistant for the Tampa Bay Rays.

“My advice is just get started now,” said Mr. Feuz, now a Senior Publicist for Major League Baseball, Little League and ESPN Radio. “I have relationships with people now that I made when I was sitting in your seats.”

Business Teacher Craig Couture agreed, noting that Mr. Feuz’s ability to turn interviews and encounters with people into meaningful relationships where he could ask their advice was always impressive.

“Even if you’re not looking for a career in sports, networking and building relationships with other people is one of the most important things you can do,” said Mr. Couture.

Answering great student questions such as what advice he would give and what is the best and worst part of his job, Mr. Feuz talked about the importance of following your passion and working hard to realize it.

“I always wanted to work for ESPN so it’s really a dream come true,” said Mr. Feuz.

Thank you so much for speaking with our students!
