Regeneron Scientists Speak with Students

Speaker talks to student

Three scientists from biotechnology company Regeneron spent part of their day last week visiting Schalmont High School, speaking to students about their work and answering questions.

Chemistry Teacher Mrs. Pris invited the guests to speak to her class so students could learn more about their research and what it is like to work in a science career.

Biotech Production Specialist Alex Birchmore, Senior Manager for Product Development Gretchen Piwinski, and Associate Biotech Production Specialist Katie Slaver shared both the type of research they’re involved in and what their day-to-day work life is like.

They also talked about their education, sharing how the skills they learned in high school classes related to what they do now.

“The fundamentals are the same. What you do here is the same as what you’ll be doing in 20 years,” Ms. Piwinski told students.

Guest speakers also challenged students with some chemistry questions and talked one-on-one with students after class, offering other possible resources based on student interests.

Thank you to Ms. Birchmore, Ms. Piwinski and Ms. Slaver for inspiring our students! Thank you Regeneron and the Society for Science for organizing this opportunity!
